Neoclinus blanhardi

Neo, a Sarcastic Fringehead (Neoclinus blanchardi), joined CMB in July of 2007 after being rescued from a sportfishing boat based in Ventura Harbor. During his tenure at CMB, Neo has earned the dubious distinction of being the most belligerent member of CMB’s scientific team. As an unfortunate consequence of his aggressive tendencies, he is the only vertebrate member of his holding tank, which is presently dominated by echinoderms and gastropods.

Resembling a pit bull with fins, Neo welcomes every visitor to CMB with a wide, toothy grin and predictably bites the hand that feeds him. Despite his innumerable character flaws and untoward social behavior, Neo is met with a surprising measure of affection by CMB students, who embrace the fish for his visionary thoughts on geopolitics, environmental justice, renewable energy, and ceviche.

Personal statement (in reference to the numerous echinoderms with which he shares office space):

Cephalization is grossly over-rated. Lacking a head doesn’t make you any less relevant. After all, Sarah Palin has a head … and she’s a veritable idiot.
